Abbott Furnace Company To Celebrate 25th Anniversary

Series of events scheduled to mark the celebration

ST. MARYS, PA, MAY 6, 2008— Abbott Furnace Company, a private Pennsylvania corporation, and North America’s leading manufacturer of continuous belt industrial furnaces will celebrate its 25th anniversary this year. A series of events is scheduled to mark the celebration.

Abbott Furnace Company was incorporated in 1983 as a manufacturing and service company for control panels. In 1986, the company built its first continuous belt furnace for the heat treat industry. From an early focus on the powdered metal industry, Abbott has expanded into other domestic and foreign industries including, annealing, brazing, glass to metal sealing and fuel cells.

“One of the keys to our success has been our culture,” said Tom Jesberger, Chief Technical Officer. He added; “the hallmarks of our initial years – an intense focus on customer service responsiveness, and a commitment to do it right – are still in place today. We pride ourselves on really understanding our customer’s processes and needs.”

Jeff Marzella, VP Operations, said; “We’ll continue to invest in people and capabilities to broaden what we offer. For example, the long term trend to tighter and tighter process control shows no sign of slowing down and we’re committed to supporting our customers in that endeavor.”

Abbott Furnace Company Successfully Tests Its Munition Treatment Unit

Improved method for neutralizing chemical munitions

ST. MARYS, PA, August 3, 2006 — Abbott Furnace Company, a private Pennsylvania corporation, announced today that it has successfully completed the build and test of its first Munitions Treatment Unit designed to safely neutralize artillery shells and mortars that contained chemical agent. Using the company’s continuous belt furnace technology, the munitions are heated to a high temperature in a steel tunnel-like oven which will safely contain and destroy any agent that remains after the munitions have been neutralized.

Abbott is one of two vendors selected by the Army’s prime contractor for a chemical demilitarization project in Pueblo, Colorado. The Pueblo plant, which is in the early stages of construction, will destroy a stockpile of chemical weapons containing mustard agent.  The munitions treatment unit will destroy any trace amounts of mustard agent that may remain on the munitions after they have been drained and the agent has been neutralized.

Tom Jesberger, Chief Technical Officer of Abbott Furnace Co. said "We are very pleased the Unit met all of the customer’s test specifications. We believe this is a superior method of treating these decades-old munitions, and we are also confident our design will be easier to maintain."

Mike Gelsick, Director of Marketing of Abbott Furnace Co. said "this is a very exciting development for the company. We are the leading manufacturer of continuous-belt sintering furnaces for the North American powdered metal industry and we are delighted to be able to utilize our technology for such a useful purpose." "Depending on a decision to deploy the Unit, orders for one or more additional units are possible", he added.

Advances in Powder Metal Sintering Technology

Featured article in the December 2006 edition of Industrial Heating

The article described several recent advancements by Abbott in powdered metal sintering:

  • A new variable injection system that allows better control of the combustion for de-lubrication.
  • A unique pusher/hybrid furnace design for sintering at up to 2350°F in low hydrogen atmospheres and targeted at high volume, higher-temperature applications.
  • An upgraded convective cooling unit providing significantly higher cooling rates and improved cooling profile management. It is ideal for high hardness sintering needs.
  • Real-time remote-monitoring capability through the Internet, making critical operating data and alarm information available around the corner or around the world.
  • Industrial Heating has been applying the latest advances in thermal technology to practical use since 1931. The magazine’s technical articles cover heat treatments, brazing, sintering, melting, process control, instrumentation, refractories, burners, heating elements, and other thermal processes typically in excess of 1000°F.
